Mircea Cărtărescu’s novel Solenoid, like his trilogy Die Wissenden, is set in the ruins of Bucharest in the final years of socialism. A catastrophic encounter with the world, highly expressive and staged like very few works of contemporary literature. Dreams and hallucinations are followed by real encounters; memories merge into incantations, obsessions and the unconscious take their place. And: great comedy repeatedly shines through in this powerful universe. In his recently published book, Melancolia, Cărtărescu writes about childhood and adolescence and tackles the grand themes of life: loneliness, separation, love.
Burgtheater actress, Dorothee Hartinger,
reads from the text. Music from the accordion
and saxophone draws a wide arc between
Moscow to Vienna and Graz, between Klezmer,
world music and jazz.
In cooperation with Festival Glatt&Verkehrt.
